Congratulations!
A Message from Tom Kjar,
President, Creighton Federal Credit Union

Congratulations!

Having a son or daughter accepted to Creighton University is thrilling and a wonderful accomplishment. You now can take a deep breath and settle into the considerable challenge of getting your student established in his or her new surroundings. That’s where we can help in a big way!

Creighton Federal Credit Union has been affiliated with Creighton University since 1952. We have a long history of helping new students get established and, indeed, continuing throughout their careers. As a parent or guardian, one of the best things you can do – for your student and yourself – is to see that they have a personal financial support system in place from the moment they walk on campus. Rest assured, Creighton Federal Credit Union is that support system! The accompanying information will briefly describe the “Creighton Federal Personal Financial Success Pack,” a package of financial tools and low-cost services exclusively for students. Here’s why the “Creighton Federal Personal Financial Success Pack” is a must for your student.

Free Basics – A Local Checking Account
Every student needs one. We offer your student checking with no minimum balance, no monthly fee and unlimited, no-fee debit transactions at merchants. Account statements are provided electronically, via email, offering faster delivery, accessible anytime, and archived online. With it comes our FREE internet banking providing 24x7 access to account histories, cleared checks, check card purchases, and transfers between accounts. And there’s plenty more.

Convenience with Assurances
We maintain a full-service office in the Skutt Student Center and six ATMs on the Creighton campus. We’re never more than a few steps away. Think of it as “peace of mind” insurance.

Cash & Check Card
We also offer students the convenience of our Cash & Check Card. Use it instead of checks wherever Visa® or MasterCard® is accepted. Purchases are automatically deducted from the student’s checking account, as if they’d written a check. It’s also your source for cash at ATMs worldwide, and at over 85 Creighton Federal or Cash Corner no transaction fee ATMs throughout the metro.

Our special Jays Student VISA® card is automatically available to all incoming new students. Because of his or her acceptance to Creighton University, your student can qualify for a Creighton Federal VISA® with a $500 limit.* A $500 limit ensures the convenience of a credit card for necessities and emergencies. At the same time, it lets the student experience the responsibilities that go with freedom to purchase without incurring a mound of debt. Other credit card companies will be offering your son or daughter credit cards with huge credit limits. We consider ourselves the responsible provider, with your student’s best long-term interest at heart. Credit limits will increase as your student progresses through school. Verified by VISA® is available for secure online shopping.
* Higher limits available with co-signer.

Student Loan Designator
829565 - It might look like just another number, but it’s much more. This number designates Creighton Federal as the financial institution funding your student’s federal student loan. The importance of designating Creighton Federal is three fold:

First, as a Creighton University preferred lender we offer 0% default fee Stafford loans , and we’ll make direct deposits of your student’s loan proceeds to Creighton University. Your student will appreciate that!

Second, we’re local with a facility right on campus. Should your student have a question or concern, we’re right there.

Third, at repayment time your student can skip their last 5 payments after making all previous payments on time. Skip 2 more payments for using auto payment. Repayment might seem a long way off, but it isn’t. And these CFCU borrower benefits add up to a lot of money!

Parents can benefit too from low interest federal PLUS loans, to help finance the costs of college. By designating Creighton Federal for funding your PLUS loan, parents can skip their last 5 payments too after making all previous payments on time. Plus, skip 2 more payments for using automatic payments.

Student Convenience!
A Creighton Federal checking account is a perfect compliment to the Creighton University Jay Bucks Card. The Jay Bucks Card serves as a student ID, and can also be used at on-campus vending machines, copy machines, and for the university meal plans. You may be asked to link your Jay Bucks Card to another financial institutions checking account, but no one can match the on-campus convenience and off-campus usability of a Creighton Federal Cash & Check Card.

There are other benefits as well. Creighton Federal’s new Interactive Member Services is a new electronic approach to member service. By logging on to our web site at creightonfederal.org you can access:

  • 24 hour email inquiries by selectable product or service automatically routed to the appropriate department for quick response;
  • Online applications for fast, efficient processing of requests;
  • StudentLink, online access to student loan information;
  • eZCardInfo, online access to your Jays Student VISA® transactions; and
  • 24 hour online check reordering;

As you can see, we’ve spent considerable time and effort developing our “Creighton Federal Personal Financial Success Pack.” We’ve worked hard to make it a valuable tool for getting students off on sound financial footing. I urge you to read the following information, then fill out and submit the online member application form.

Thank you, and please let me know how Creighton Federal can be of service.

Sincerely,
Tom Kjar
President, Creighton Federal Credit Union

P.S. As a final good faith gesture, you have my personal commitment to open your student’s account over the summer with a $5.00 or more balance. It’ll be ready in the fall.

Preferred Lender
Creighton Federal Credit Union is a Creighton University "Preferred Lender"
Creighton University has placed this credit union on its " preferred lender " list. This change helps students save hundreds, even thousands, in student loan costs. All Creighton Federal Stafford loans have a 0% default fee. By making payments on time, borrowers can skip up to 7 payments!

The World is Full of Numbers, Here's One You'll Want to Write Down... 829565
When it's time to designate a student loan provider, use this number- 829565 ! This number gives Creighton University and the government the identity of the lender that is administering your student loan. It might not seam like it, but it's an important number.

Designate Creighton Federal as your Student Loan Lender for Subsidized Stafford, Unsubsidized Stafford, and Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS Loans). Save big money with Creighton Federal's Borrower Benefits. Skip the last 5 payments on your loan after making all previous payments on time. Skip 2 more payments for making automatic payments.

Student Loans
Many students rely on federal government loans to finance their educations. These loans have low interest rates and do not require credit checks or collateral. Student loans also provide a variety of deferment options and extended repayment terms.

The federal loan for students is called the Stafford Loan:

  • These loans are provided by private lenders, such as credit unions. These loans are guaranteed against default by the federal government.
  • All Stafford Loans are either subsidized (the government pays the interest while you're in school) or unsubsidized (you pay all the interest, although you can have the payments deferred until after graduation). To receive a subsidized Stafford Loan, you must be able to demonstrate financial need.
  • With the unsubsidized Stafford loan, you can defer the payments until after graduation by capitalizing the interest. This adds the interest payments to the loan balance, increasing the size and cost of the loan. All students, regardless of need, are eligible for the unsubsidized Stafford Loan.
  • Stafford Loans allow dependent undergraduates to borrow up to $3,500 their freshman year, $4,500 their sophomore year and $5,500 for each remaining year. Graduate students can borrow $18,500 per year, although only $8,500 of that is subsidized.
  • Many students combine subsidized loans with unsubsidized loans to borrow the maximum amount permitted each year.
  • All Stafford loans issued after July 1, 2008 will have a fixed rate of 6.0%. All lenders offer the same rate for the Stafford Loan, although some give discounts for on-time and electronic payment.

To apply for a Stafford Loan, you must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Even though the unsubsidized Stafford Loan is available to all students regardless of financial need, you must still submit the FASFA to be eligible. You can receive a subsidized loan and an unsubsidized loan for the same period.

Parent Loans
Parents of dependent students can take out loans to supplement their children's aid packages. The federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) lets parents borrow money to cover any costs not already covered by the student's financial aid package, up to the full cost of attendance.

All PLUS loans issued after July 1, 2008 will have a fixed rate of 8.5%. Repayment begins 60 days after the funds are fully disbursed, and the repayment term is up to 10 years.

PLUS loans are the financial responsibility of the parents, not the student. If the student agrees to make payments on the PLUS loan, but fails to make the payments on time, the parents will be held responsible.

Taxpayer Relief Act
The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 created tax benefits for families who are paying for college or repaying student loans. The IRS has a publication that thoroughly covers these and other new education tax benefits:
Publication 970-Tax Benefits for Higher Education, which may help to determine if you qualify for benefits summarized below. Publication 970 can be downloaded from the IRS information website (you need Adobe Acrobat) or you can call 1-800-TAX_FORM to ask for a copy. Consult a tax account for more detailed information.

Hope Scholarship Tax Credit
You can receive a 100% tax credit for the first $1,000 tuition/fees (less grants and scholarships), and a 50% credit on the second $1,000 for a total credit up to $1,500. The student, however, must be enrolled at least half-time and be in the first two years of college. There are some income restrictions.

Lifetime Learning Credit
You may be eligible to claim a 20% tax credit for the first $5,000 tuition/fees paid each year (less grants/scholarships) through 2002, and for the first $10,000 thereafter. There are some income limitations. Families may claim the Hope Scholarship for some students and the Lifetime Learning credit for others in the same year.

Student Loan Interest Deduction
You may deduct interest paid in the first 60 months of repayment on student loans. You may take the deduction even if you don't itemize your taxes, as long as you're not claimed as a dependent on another person's tax return. Some income limitations apply.

Cost of Education
Colleges use the formula below for awarding financial aid:
Cost of Education - Family Contribution = Financial Need
  • Cost of Education includes tuition and fees, books, and supplies, room and board, transportation and some personal expenses.
  • Your Family Contribution is determined from the FAFSA. This amount is the same regardless of the college you attend.
  • Financial Need is calculated from the formula above. Your financial need will change depending on the cost of the school. Types of Financial Aid Scholarships are sometimes based on financial need, but may award talents such as academics or music. Look for scholarships a year before you attend college.

Grants are difficult to qualify for because they are based on financial need. They are considered gift aid and don't have to be repaid. Complete the FAFSA to determine if you are eligible for the following grants:

  • Federal Pell Grant
The largest grant fund available. Pell Grants range from $400 to $2,700.
  • Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
A federal grant administered by the college financial aid office.
  • State Grant
A joint federal and state funded grant program. Contact your college financial aid office to find out how to apply for this grant in your state.
  • Institutional Grants
Many colleges administer their own private grant funds, contact your college financial aid office for details. Federal Work-Study jobs are often offered to students with financial need and who submit their FAFSA on time. Student Loans are an excellent resource if you borrow wisely. Your financial aid office determines if you qualify for need-based or non-need-based loans.
  • The Federal Perkins Loan may be offered by your college and requires a completed promissory note.
  • Through the Federal Stafford Loan Program, students with financial need may qualify to have the government pay loan interest while in school. Those who don't show need may qualify for an Unsubsidized Stafford Loan.
  • The Federal PLUS Loan is for parents to help fund their child's education.
